Iowa State University and its athletic department announced plans Thursday for a new 36,000-square foot basketball practice facility, pending approvals from the city of Ames as well as the Board of Regents.

One of the great things about college football is trying to decide which conference is the toughest because it changes on a yearly basis, depending on what publication is doing the writing. 

Many years, it has been between the Southeastern Conference and the Big Ten - and that dates to the 1970s, when rivalries developed between coaches like Paul "Bear" Bryant at Alabama, Woody Hayes at Ohio State and Bo Schembechler at Michigan.

Late last week, Leatherneck football coach Don Patterson informed Western Illinois University athletic personnel of his immediate leave of absence citing medical reasons. Patterson was recently diagnosed with tonsillar cancer.

Cancer of the tonsils occurs predominantly in men.

Although he denied rumors in April, Favre now says that he made a mistake and retired too early, and would like to return to Lambeau Field. Favre, who is currently on the NFL's retirement-reserve list, has asked the Green Bay Packers to release him if they will not allow him to return.

During the 2008 track and field season, Deserea Brown earned two National Championships, multiple All-American awards and became a semi-finalist for Olympic qualifying for SIUE.

Now, five weeks before the beginning of fall semester, the decorated athlete has cut all ties with the university.
