Geoff steps out of his box
By Caroline English
"Welcome to Rockhurst University, Geoff speaking". This is how you know Geoff, or rather his voice. Geoff Smith is the one you see everyday on the way to the cafeteria. He's always there with a smile on his face, in a small glass box on the top of the stairs of Massman. But Geoff is more than just a friendly face; he is a man of answers.
Recently, Geoff celebrated 10 years of working for Rockhurst and answering the many questions of the students. He is not just a switchboard operator, though that is what his job started out as. The longer he worked here, the longer his job description became. He helps students with their voicemail, ID's, locating the proper person to help with your financial aid, and telephone problems; the list goes on and on. Geoff Smith is a database for all of the odd questions one might have about Rockhurst.
One might think that being confined to a small office all day would be a bit suffocating. Not Geoff, he loves it. He doesn't feel confined at all; he does have those windows to look out of. Geoff actually has constant interaction with the students and the people of Rockhurst. He not only knows all; he sees all as well. He notices when someone is feeling a bit down or is having a really good day. He enjoys seeing students grow up here. The first few weeks of a school year, he sees all the lost faces of the freshmen and then their confident looks after a couple of months. The students are what keep Geoff going.
Besides the students, Geoff just really enjoys college life. He believes at college you find yourself and become who you want to be. College is an open door to opportunity. He is a strong believer that the friends you make at college are the ones that you will have for life. And Geoff is living proof of that; he still spends time with the same group of guys he did while he was at school.
Though Geoff does spend a lot of time at Rockhurst, he does have a life outside of it. He is actually very knowledgeable on many subjects. He enjoys going to museums and looking at art. He is an avid reader and listens to a wide variety of music. He is currently on a Hindi music and movies kick. He is also a big fan of classical music and jazz. Geoff enjoys life and wants to live it. He likes to travel and see the sights. He craves new things and ideas and has the willingness to try them. Geoff has a passion for learning. He takes classes here at Rockhurst, always expanding his knowledge.
Geoff will always be there for the students. He has an amazing understanding of what college students are going through. He is a great person to talk to whether it is about Rockhurst, a new interesting movie, or even directions to the DMV. So next time you are hanging around the cafeteria, walk around the corner and give Geoff a wave and he'll be sure to do the same.
