The classical Greeks had many traditions that we have continued into the modern age. One tradition started by a lone runner named Pheidippides who dashed from Marathon to Athens to announce the Grecian victory over the Persians gave us the tradition of the marathon. A dedicated group of Rockhurst students are continuing that tradition in the 2006 Waddell and Reed Kansas City Marathon.
The Rockhurst Running Club, which is open to runners of all levels and your running resource here on campus, is sponsoring sophomores Karla Jarcke and Ben Perkins and Chris Seiler in the half-marathon and senior Alex Luedtke in the marathon. On October 7th, 2006 these intrepid souls will dash around Kansas City after months of difficult training to once again prove that the human spirit is boundless.
Sophmore Ben Perkins revels in the fact that endurance running, "Puts you in great shape and that the personal challenge of endurance is very fulfilling and I have not found anything else as challenging."
Senior Alex Luedtke echoes similar sentiments, "Running is a way to prove that the human body can conquer anything if a positive mind allows it."
Sophmore Karla Jarcke runs because, "It is something that has always given me a good feeling and personal growth."
Whatever the reason on October 7th these three runners will accomplish a goal that less than 1% of the United States population will accomplish in their entire lives. Make sure you are there to cheer them on at either mile marker 6 on the Plaza or mile marker 20 and 21 at Troost and Volker Boulevard or between miles 15 and 16 on between 63rd and 47th streets on Brookside Boulevard. If you are interested in running whether for racing or recreation contact the Rockhurst Running Club at luedtkea@rockhurst.edu or by phone at 402-212-6756.
