On August 21, the day after school started, there were problems with the air conditioning in both Sedgwick and Van Ackeren Halls. According to Matt Heinrich, Associate VP for Facilities and Technology, the motor that powers the compressor in Sedgwick Hall had failed and due to the age of the equipment, it was no longer possible to find a replacement part and to repair it, it had to be shipped to St. Louis to be rewound.

On Tuesday, the air conditioning was finally fixed.

For many students who had to go up to the 3rd floor or Sedgwick for their classes, you could tell that they were definitely feeling the heat.

After asking around campus, many students agreed. With the weather creeping its way up to higher temperatures, many believed a new air conditioner was needed.

And I agree. I had a class on the 3rd floor and even with the windows open; I could still feel the heat. Heat rises, and the windows didn't seem to be helping with the problem of the heat.

So, what should we do to prevent this from happening again?

In my opinion, I believe that a new air conditioner would be beneficial. Also, if the new air conditioner should break, a replacement part could easily be found and not sent to St. Louis to be rewound.

Editor's Note: As of Wednesday, August 27, the air conditioning in both Sedgwick Hall and Van Ackeran Hall had been restored.

The problems appear to have been resolved, and air should pump evenly throughout both buildings in the coming weeks and months.

In order to ensure such a problem does not arise again, proper window use is encourages in all classrooms and offices.

In the end, cooler heads prevailed as Physical Plant quickly amended the problem. If future issues with building cooling and heating arise, contact Matt Heinrich, Associate VP for Facilities and Technology.
