Will Ludo gallop into town for Rockstock this spring?
Will Ludo gallop into town for Rockstock this spring?

Recently, I was given the opportunity to see Ludo when they came through Kansas City on their “Apocalypse Now on Ice” tour, as well as do an interview with drummer Matt Palermo. I was able to get a lot of information regarding the writing process for the band, the new record, touring and plans for the rest of the year as well as 2009.

But first, let’s get to know our friends.

Ludo, known for their quirky power-pop songs, first formed in 2003 with the earliest version of the band being vocalist/guitarist Andrew Volpe and lead guitarist Tim Ferrell playing duo acoustic shows at coffee houses and the likes. Before they knew it, Ludo was a full-fledged band, with Tim Convey on keys/vocals, Marshall Fanciullo on bass and Palermo on drums, recording their first album in St. Louis for Redbird Records. Ludo continued to tour and released Broken Bride in 2005.

Ludo, making a name for themselves by way of touring their asses off and their DIY attitude, signed to Island Records in 2006 and released their major-label debut, You’re Awful, I Love You this past February. They just finished their first headlining tour in support of it.

Palermo gave me some insight to the writing process for the band, stating that all members contribute equally to the collaboration, taking away credit from the traditional idea that drummers and bass players shut up and do what they’re told. Everyone contributes ideas about a song, especially this time around.

For the first time ever, the band was able to take their sweet time with the recording process, given time with pre-production and allowed to work the songs over and over until everyone was happy with the way they sounded.

The band felt that their new record was a combination of the first two, where the self-titled album was rushed and fleshed out in a matter of weeks, while Broken Bride was the first real collaboration.

“Everyone threw in their ideas,” said Palermo. “It was something truly weird, and we loved it.”

The band just finished their first-ever headlining tour, “Apocalypse Now on Ice” and plan to finish out the year with a few shows here and there, including their annual Christmas show in St. Louis, “A Very Ludo Christmas.”

After that, the band is going to take a much-needed break and come back in the early spring with a more Midwest-oriented tour, very much in time for Rockstock (take note, SAB).

In fact, when told they are known on campus for being a part of the last good Rockstock, Palermo can’t help but feel flattered.

“Tell them to contact us and we’ll do it again.”

Ludo? Really? How about distributing the money that SAB would spend on a big name band(let alone one I have never heard of)among 5 or 6 bands of various genres. (Continued…)
