Have you ever thought about what Rockhurst has given to you?
This year, a newly formed committee, The Senior Giving Board, has led a strong effort to inform Rockhurst students (specifically graduating seniors) about the importance of giving back to Rockhurst University.
The Senior Giving Board, organized by Kevin Becvar, Jessica Ward and the Rockhurst Alumni Office has aimed to educate graduating seniors about ways to give back, hoping that seniors will leave Rockhurst with a greater understanding of how important our contributions are in order to strengthen the university.
Becvar notes that "Tuition only covers 63 percent of the actual cost to attend Rockhurst. The remaining amount is covered by the university and gifts from alumni, parents, and friends."
Last year, only 3% of the graduating seniors gave donations to Rockhurst; Becvar, Ward and the rest of the members of the Senior Giving Board hope to achieve 50% participation with this year's graduating class.
Board members have spent the last few months planning ways to educate outgoing seniors about alumni contributions and to inspire them to think about making a donation.
"It can be difficult to ask people to help give money to the school," says Kayla Smith, Board member. "But over the last weeks, I've realized how much Rockhurst has done for me. Making a personal contribution, no matter how large or how small, is one way I can say thank you to the school."
This year, graduating seniors will have several opportunities to have memorable experiences with each other. Seniors Marisa Hamm and Doyle Witt have helped organized a new program this year called Senior Disorientation.
Senior Disorientation will offer several events for seniors to participate with each other, before everyone takes the final march during graduation.
"Senior Disorientation will be a great time We started Rockhurst with Freshman Orientation, and since then we've grown really close as a class. With this new tradition, we will be inspired to unify and consider giving to the school that has given us so much already."
Although the days of being an undergraduate student are limited, graduation is the beginning of a lifetime membership in the Rockhurst Community.
Here's a list of Senior Disorientation Events:
Senior Royal's Game - Monday, May 4
Senior Night at Mike's - Saturday, May 9
Seniorfest- Thursday, May 14
